South Island Genomic Calibration (SIGC)

We’re enabling more accurate predictors for quality production.

The South Island Genomic Calibration (SIGC) is a training population for enabling phenotypic measures for genomic predictions that indicate meat eating quality.

Run on Duncraigen, in the Te Anau Basin, the SIGC flock arose from the Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) project FarmIQ. Focus Genetics is the largest provider of rams to the programme. This provides Focus Genetics sheep breeding programme with accurate genomic estimates for eating quality traits; tenderness, marbling, pH and fat colour. These are included in our terminal breeding objective to continually improve eating quality while optimising genetic gain for productive growth.
