Dr. Duncan McLean
DATA ANALYST (BSc, MSc & PhD)
Strong expertise in recurrent selection, prediction accuracy, and balancing genetic gain with inbreeding over long breeding cycles.
Dr Duncan McLean is a Data Analyst at Focus Genetics, working within the Sheep of the Future programme to analyse large datasets covering both established and novel traits. As the programme has matured, his role focuses on understanding genetic architecture and translating complex quantitative models into clear, practical breeding decisions.
With a PhD and postdoctoral background in quantitative genetics from the national radiata pine breeding programme, Duncan brings strong expertise in recurrent selection, prediction accuracy, and balancing genetic gain with inbreeding over long breeding cycles. This experience, working with large datasets and robust models, closely aligns with the challenges of modern animal breeding.
Duncan is particularly motivated by the cumulative impact of animal breeding, where each selection decision contributes to measurable genetic gain across generations. He places strong value on clear communication, ensuring complex genetic concepts are translated into insights that support real-world decision-making and industry application.
Through his work, Duncan aims to ensure the significant investment behind Sheep of the Future is fully realised, turning high-quality data into meaningful genetic gain that improves on-farm profitability, strengthens rural communities, and supports New Zealand’s agricultural productivity.
