We focus on delivering continuing lifts in profitability for venison farmers around New Zealand.
We offer Red Deer as a maternal sire and Wapiti as a terminal sire, and focus on commercial traits that highlight growth, early fawning, medium hind size, and higher yields from the major primal regions.
Our Red Deer programme targets a breeding objective of commercially based profitability in a venison production system.
Selection is for commercial traits that highlight growth, early fawning, medium hind size, and higher yields from the major primal regions. Landcorp’s commercial farms cover a wide range of challenging environments and our selection index accounts for the production systems that are appropriate to those environments. Velvet production is not part of this objective.
Our Wapiti herds have been at the forefront of objectively selected Wapiti to suit the New Zealand venison industry needs.
Because our Wapiti fit the role of a terminal sire, velvet is not incorporated in our genetic direction. Selection decisions emphasise growth and primal cut yields – especially when our sires are crossed over Red hinds.
Landcorp’s commercial farms have experienced the advantage of our selection on a terminal sire index – Wapiti X Red hybrids have been weaned at heavier weights, and have grown on to earlier slaughter and heavier carcass weights.
